Seeking God’s Wisdom Above All Else | Bible Study for Today

Our Bible study for today is titled: Seeking God’s Wisdom Above All Else.

In First Kings chapter 3 verses 10 to 15, the Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom rather than selfish gain. God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked.

I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for, both wealth and honor, so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.” Then Solomon awoke, and he realized it had been a dream.

He returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the Lord’s covenant and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then he gave a feast for all his court.

This passage powerfully relates to Christians today who face overwhelming responsibilities, complex decisions, and the constant pull of worldly success. Solomon, though a king, humbly recognized his limitations and asked God for a discerning heart to lead God’s people justly. God delighted in this request and granted not only wisdom but also riches and honor as bonuses, while tying continued blessing to obedience.

In our modern world of career pressures, family challenges, social media comparison, and moral complexities, believers are similarly tempted to pray first for comfort, wealth, or personal victory. Yet God is pleased when we prioritize His wisdom above self-centered desires, just as Jesus taught in Matthew chapter 6 verse 33: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

True wisdom equips us to serve others with integrity. Like Solomon, we can admit our need and ask God, who “gives generously to all without finding fault” (James chapter 1 verse 5). This heavenly wisdom helps navigate ethical dilemmas at work, resolve family conflicts, and lead in the church or community with fairness rather than self-promotion.

Proverbs chapter 3 verses 5 and 6 instructs us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” When our hearts align with God’s purposes, He often provides more than we ask, as seen in Ephesians chapter 3 verse 20: God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.”

However, Solomon’s story also warns us. The extra blessings came with the condition of ongoing obedience. Later in life, Solomon drifted, showing the danger of taking God’s gifts for granted. For today’s Christians, this calls for daily dependence on the Holy Spirit, consistent time in God’s Word, and a lifestyle of worship and gratitude, just as Solomon responded by offering sacrifices and sharing a feast.

In daily application, pause before big decisions, whether in career, relationships, or finances, and ask for God’s wisdom. Prioritize justice and service in leadership roles at home or work. Shift prayer from wish lists to requests that advance God’s kingdom. Share this truth with others, encouraging fellow believers to seek the Lord first amid cultural pressures for instant success.

Solomon’s encounter reminds us that God honors humble, God-centered hearts. In a world obsessed with power and self-fulfillment, Christians are called to a better way: dependence on the Lord, pursuit of His wisdom, and faithful obedience.

Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Solomon in First Kings chapter 3. Give us a wise and discerning heart to navigate life in ways that honor You. Help us seek Your kingdom first, trust Your provision, and walk in obedience all our days. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
