In first Samuel chapter 28, we encounter one of the saddest moments in the life of King Saul. The chapter reveals what can happen when a person consistently rejects God's guidance and then desperately seeks answers when trouble comes.
As the Philistine army prepared for war against Israel, Saul became terrified. The Bible says that when he saw the enemy forces, his heart trembled with fear. In his distress, Saul sought direction from God, but the Lord did not answer him through dreams, prophets, or other means. This was not because God had become unwilling to speak, but because Saul had spent years resisting God's instructions and living in disobedience. He wanted God's help in a crisis, but he had not cultivated a relationship of obedience with God.
This teaches an important lesson for Christians today. Our relationship with God should not be limited to moments of emergency. Many people ignore God when life is comfortable but suddenly seek Him when problems arise. God desires daily fellowship with His people. Jeremiah chapter 29 verse 13 says, "When you come looking for me, you'll find me. Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else."
Instead of repenting and turning wholeheartedly to God, Saul chose a dangerous path. Although he had previously removed mediums and spiritists from the land according to God's command, he secretly sought out a medium at Endor to obtain guidance. In his fear and desperation, Saul turned to something that God had clearly forbidden.
This reveals how fear can drive people toward wrong solutions when their faith is weak. Fear often causes people to abandon biblical principles in search of immediate answers. Today, many people turn to horoscopes, fortune tellers, occult practices, superstition, false prophets, or other spiritual substitutes instead of seeking God through prayer and His Word. Yet Scripture consistently warns against seeking supernatural guidance outside of God. Deuteronomy chapter 18 verses 10 to 12 strongly condemns such practices because they lead people away from dependence on the Lord.
The tragedy of Saul's life was not simply that he visited a medium. The real tragedy was that this decision was the result of years of spiritual decline. Long before this moment, Saul had repeatedly ignored God's instructions, justified his disobedience, and hardened his heart. Sin rarely destroys a person overnight. It usually begins with small compromises that gradually distance the heart from God.
When Saul received the message that judgment was coming upon him and his kingdom, he was overwhelmed with fear and despair. Instead of finding hope, he found confirmation of the consequences of his choices. This serves as a sobering reminder that there are consequences to persistent disobedience. Galatians chapter 6 verse 7 teaches, "Don't be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest."
At the same time, this chapter highlights the importance of maintaining a close relationship with God before difficult seasons arrive. When challenges come, believers should not be scrambling to build a connection with God. Daily prayer, obedience, worship, and study of Scripture prepare us to face life's battles with confidence. Psalm 46 verse 1 declares, "God is a safe place to hide, ready to help when we need him."
For Christians today, first Samuel chapter 28 is both a warning and an invitation. It warns us against allowing fear, desperation, or impatience to lead us away from God's truth. It also invites us to remain close to God, trusting Him even when answers seem delayed. God's silence is never a license to seek guidance from ungodly sources. Instead, it is often a call to deeper faith, greater patience, and sincere self-examination.
Saul's story reminds us that the safest place for any believer is in a life of consistent obedience and dependence upon God. When we walk closely with Him, we can face uncertainty without fear, knowing that our future remains in His hands.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, help us to seek You first in every situation. Keep us from fear, compromise, and the temptation to look for answers outside of Your will. Strengthen our faith to trust You even when we do not immediately understand what You are doing. Draw us closer to You each day and help us to walk in obedience. In Jesus' name, Amen.
