He is a man who has lied to a priest and feigned madness in enemy territory.  This cave near the Philistine border is easily defensible, but it is also a place of humiliation. A hole in the ground where outlaws hide. Yet Scripture records: "Everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul gathered to David". These are not Israel's elite. They are the broken, the bankrupt, the disillusioned men with nowhere else to turn.  David does not turn them away, hee becomes their captain, and four hundred distressed men become the foundation of his kingdom.
